    OurDream AI

Best AI companion overall — realism, depth, and a billing descriptor you can check

    8.5 /10

The short version OurDream AI pairs the most consistent character rendering we have tested with chat that actually remembers — and it is the only app here whose billing descriptor we could read before paying. The credit system is the catch.

    • Characters keep the same face and body across renders — the failure point for most rivals
    • Six-step creation wizard with free-text custom face and physique fields
    • Billing descriptor is disclosed at checkout before you pay, not after
    • Everything runs on credits, and the 50 free ones go fast — messages cost 1 each on the free tier
    • Annual plan costs 2.5x Candy AI's annual plan

    Candy AI

The cheapest way into the top tier — and the one that takes crypto

    8.4 /10

The short version The most polished companion app we have tested and by a distance the cheapest way into that standard — $3.99 a month, top-tier visuals, and the only checkout in our set that takes crypto. It passed our memory test cleanly.

    • Cheapest route into top-tier quality at $3.99 a month annually
    • Crypto accepted alongside Apple Pay and cards — the most private checkout we have tested
    • Passed our memory test cleanly, recalling two planted details on demand
    • Does not show the bank statement descriptor at checkout — pay in crypto if that matters
    • Promotional email is on by default; switch it off in profile settings

    GirlfriendGPT

    Best for uncensored character chat

    7.8 /10

The short version GirlfriendGPT focuses on uncensored, character-driven AI chat with image generation. A strong pick if you want variety of companions and a permissive filter.

    • Large library of characters / strong variety
    • Permissive, uncensored roleplay
    • Free tier to test before paying
    • Single-companion polish trails the visual leaders
    • Image quality is a step behind Candy AI and OurDream

    Lovescape

    Best for deep customization

    7.8 /10

The short version Lovescape is an AI girlfriend platform with strong companion customization alongside chat and image generation. A solid all-round pick.

    • The deepest companion customization of the apps we rank
    • Covers chat and image generation competently
    • Free tier to test before paying
    • Does not clearly lead any single axis apart from customization
    • Setup takes longer than rivals before the product feels good
  5. 05

    Joi AI

    Best for voice & calls

    7.5 /10

The short version Joi AI is an AI companion focused on voice and conversation alongside image generation. A strong pick if voice interaction matters to you.

    • Strongest voice and call layer in the category
    • Core chat and image experience covered
    • Free tier to test before paying
    • Image realism trails the visual leaders
    • The voice layer is where the value sits — text alone is unremarkable

    DreamGF

    Best budget-friendly AI girlfriend

    7.1 /10

The short version DreamGF is a solid, affordable entry point to AI girlfriends — chat plus image generation at a lower starting price than the premium players.

    • Lower starting price than premium rivals
    • Covers the core chat and image experience competently
    • Free tier available, and discounts run often
    • Less polished than the category leaders
    • Image realism is good rather than elite

Questions About Virl

About us →
How does Virl make money?
Virl earns affiliate commissions when you sign up through our links, at no extra cost to you. Commissions never influence scores or rankings — our six pillar weights are fixed and published on the How We Test page. If the best app for you is one we earn nothing from, that is still the one we point you to.
Can a platform pay for a better score or a higher position?
No, and there is no arrangement under which it could. We do not accept sponsored placements, we do not send drafts to platforms for approval, and no brand has ever seen a review before it went live. The ranking order is computed from the pillar weights rather than assigned by hand.
What does "tested" mean on Virl?
Free tiers, character creators, live conversations and checkout pages are all tested first-hand. Paid-tier testing is rolling out app by app — where something sits behind a paywall we have not crossed, we say so rather than score a guess. Every measurement you read — prices, credit costs, what a free tier stops you doing, how a charge reads on a statement — came from a session on our own account, not from a brand's marketing page.
Is Eli Voss a real person?
Eli Voss is a pen name, and there is one real person behind it — the same person who buys the accounts, runs the tests and writes every review on this site. In a category where discretion is half the product, it would be strange to demand it from the apps and not practise it ourselves. The name is consistent and accountable: if something here is wrong, it is wrong under one byline rather than an anonymous "editorial team".
How often are reviews updated?
We re-test our top picks every quarter, and whenever a major update lands. Pricing and credit systems in this category change often, so every review carries the date its measurements were taken. Treat anything older than a quarter as a guide rather than a quote, and check the current price at checkout.
Why do some apps appear without a score?
Because we have not put them through the scorecard yet. Apps we have tested are ranked and scored; apps we have only listed appear in a separate, labelled section with no score attached. Giving an untested app a number would make the other numbers meaningless.
